Welcome to the Troop 244 Website!

Do you like adventure? Do you want to learn outdoor skills and know how take care of yourself and others in the wilderness? Do you want to lead others, learn new skills and serve those in need in your community? Do you want to cook over a campfire with your friends while breathing in fresh air and listening to the wind in the trees overhead?  Does hiking to a stream, taking off your shoes and jumping in sound like fun?  Would you dare kayak 50 miles down a river knowing you have been taught everything you need to know to do it? Will you feel proud after carrying a meal you planned in your backpack for 5 miles then cooking it for your friends on the trail? Will you build a fort in the woods and sleep in it, knowing you've built it well?

Troop 244 can show you the path to fly like an Eagle. We are seeking interested young men, of any faith from any school to join us in our journey. Visit us on Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 at Saint Pius School to learn more. Please select "Send Email" to request more information.

South Mountains State Park Backpacking Updates

Posted on Nov 19 2020 - 12:19pm

UPDATE Nov 19th:

  • South Mountains State Park website noted flash flooding last week washed out several of the small foot bridges that cross Shinny Creek. The water level is approximately shin deep or less with lack of recent rain fall. We recommend that scouts bring hiking poles to aid in rock hopping and creek crossing and have pants that can be easily rolled up or wear shorts. Scouts should consider bringing a pair of crocs or water shoes (clip on outside of your pack along with a small hand towel) for quick access should they be needed at water crossings. This keeps your hiking boots or shoes dry and your feet warm and helps avoid blisters
  • Friday evening trail has two creek crossings and has approximately a 7% grade making it relatively easy.
  • All scouts that attended summer camp in 2020 have submitted the appropriate medical forms. If you did not go to summer camp you will need to bring Health Forms A and B to departure area Friday evening (these do not require a physical). Note there are only TWO COVID forms needed for health check (see below).
  • Anyone arriving Saturday must check in at the Ranger's Office and get a parking pass. Please arrive in camp no later than 9:00 AM Saturday so you can setup.
  • Scouts and Adults are responsible for bringing all meals except Saturday dinner which the troop is providing for ALL (NOTE: Eagle Patrol exception below). Please read below "Meals" for a Philmont style meal option. Currently Scoutmaster currently has orders from Kerns family, Jim Eddington, Alex Rosser, Jim Leggett, Joey Johnston and the following buddy groups- Declan/Kaiden and AJ/Chase. Each pre-packaged meal feeds two. It's a simple system and often folks end up trading items to suit their individual tastes.
  •  Please arrive timely at SPX Troop trailer at 5:00 PM Friday. Please update registration information online to accurately reflect any carpooling arrangements.

NOTES:

  • All water must be filtered- water will come from streams and must be filtered. Troop will have water filtration on trail but it will be shared by many so we encourage scouts to bring (1.5-2.0) liters of water and carry water filtration devices they may have. Food that is not freeze dried or vacuum sealed should be packed in Ziplock bags and clearly labeled. Food will be collected and stored in secure group bins or bear bags designated for this purpose while in camp. Scouts may retrieve items as needed.
  • Meals- Each Scout will be responsible for providing and cooking their own meals except Saturday dinner which the Troop will provide. In addition Patrick Smith will be providing and cooking Saturday lunch for EAGLE patrol members only. Scoutmaster has purchased a number of pre-packaged breakfast and lunch meals from Philmont Scout Ranch that were being sold at a discount due to the cancellation of the 2020 summer season. Meal costs are approx $3.00 each. If you have an interest please email Scoutmaster directly.
  • Buddy's- Scouts were required to identify a “Buddy” for safety and to share gear in an effort to keep pack weights in check. Backpacking stoves and food are examples of items that can be shared. All buddy's are listed on the event "Attendee List" under notes. Scouts should communicate with their buddy so each can pack efficiently and avoid duplicate items. All Scouts must have a buddy regardless of sleeping or meal arrangements.

We ask those attending meet at the St. Pius Gym / Troop Trailer area Friday at 5:00 PM. Scouts should be in Class A uniform (with Class B shirt underneath), both COVID forms below, gear and dinner in hand.
